Visual artists create original works of art through various mediums. Traditional formats include drawings, paintings, collage, and photography. Typical creative materials are acrylics, oils, watercolours, pastels, pencil, and ink.
Increasingly, new modes of expression are being explored thanks to the availability of emerging technologies and methods of image creation/manipulation. These new digital mediums are comprised of formats such as digital illustration and collage, animation, and video and sound installation.
Visual Artist are for the most part self-employed and focus on the production and distribution/display of their own creative work. However, they also participate in related employment such as illustration, graphic and interior design, sign and mural painting, set decorating and background painting, artwork restoration, and art education.
Skills
No formal education or training is specifically required for entry into this field. However, formal art and/or design training is a must for those who seek to excel in their chosen medium.
Apprenticeship, specialized training, vocational, college, and undergraduate education is readily available in the province of Manitoba.
