Make-up Artists apply make-up to performers for motion pictures, television, news broadcasts, theatre and stage productions, and other live and recorded productions.
They requisition and/or supply cosmetics and make-up supplies. They apply cosmetic and special effect make-up on actors and other performers – sometimes applying prostheses to change their physical appearance. In a film or broadcast context, Make-up Artists often compile information from period files to obtain reference for the characters they are helping create.
Make-up Artists are employed by the theatre, musical, television, and film industries. They are typically self-employed. Jobs may range from as short as a few minutes or hours (life performance) to many weeks and months (film, television, and theatre).
Skills
Skills are often learned through apprenticeship with a master artist. Experience in motion pictures, broadcasting, or the performing arts is often required.
Training programs may be offered by private studios, industry associations, and colleges.
